10 - Plumbing Fixtures: Faucets and Sinks - Operation, Installation, and Common Problems
Learn everything about faucets and sinks in this detailed episode covering the fixtures that deliver water and receive wastewater in residential plumbing systems. Understanding these common fixtures helps you identify functional issues and safety concerns.
Faucet types receive comprehensive coverage, starting with compression faucets—the oldest and simplest type with two handles and seat washers. We progress through ball faucets with their rounded bodies and single handles, cartridge faucets with cylindrical mechanisms, and disc faucets with ceramic sealing surfaces. For each type, you'll learn operation, common failure modes, and repair approaches.
Hose connection faucets (hose bibbs) receive special attention, including freeze protection methods: stop-and-waste valves and frost-proof designs. You'll understand why these considerations matter in cold climates and how to evaluate freeze protection adequacy.
Aerators and flow restrictors are explained, including how they work and why they're often the cause of low functional flow complaints. You'll learn the maximum flow rates for sinks and showers and understand water conservation requirements.
Sprayers and diverters receive coverage, including common problems and acceptable performance standards. Shower valve requirements are explained in detail, focusing on temperature limiting devices, pressure balance systems, and proper stop setting.
The sink section covers all common types: kitchen sinks, lavatories, laundry sinks, wet bar sinks, vessel sinks, and pedestal vanities. We explain drainage requirements, including trap and fixture drain sizing, proper installation, and working space requirements.
Special topics include overflow testing considerations, pop-up stopper adjustment, and the problems created when installing deeper sinks or adding second sinks without proper drainage modifications.
